Missions
Meals on Wheels:
Foundry teams of two take prepared noon meals to those in the Virginia Beach area who need the personal contact and food. (Volunteers are needed to provide transportation occasionally also). The second week of each month.
Faith Works Coalition:
In January of 2008, the former Covenant for Habitat for Humanity of Virginia Beach members made a commitment to one another to form a new not-for-profit organization that could focus exclusively on repairing existing homes of those in need primarily in Virginia Beach. The name chosen for the new organization was Faith Works Coalition, Inc. (FWC) which formally established as its mission:
· Improve housing for low income elderly and working families
· Improve quality of life in low income neighborhoods
· Build community spirit in Virginia Beach, and enhance the joy of fellowship inherent in faith based, volunteer community projects and
· Provide emergency relief through repair and reconstruction of homes in communities suffering from natural disasters.
Serving the Homeless (Judeo-Christian Outreach Center-JCOC)
The JCOC is a non-profit, full service recovery center that provides free food, housing, job training and on-site case management. JCOC also provides an after school mentoring program and a preschool program for at-risk children. Every other month Foundry provides an evening meal for those who come to eat at the JCOC. You can help by donating food, cooking part of the meal, and providing transportation or serving. Volunteers are also needed in tutoring adults and helping with the afterschool and preschool programs. Donations for the Thrift Center are always appreciated.
Food Pantry:
Foundry partners with Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia to provide both perishable and non-perishable foods to families in need. The Food Pantry is open one morning each week and serves walk-in clients and those who have been referred from the Foodbank and the Department of Social Services. Volunteers are needed for staffing the Food Pantry as well as for going on shopping trips to the Foodbank, loading and unloading the purchases, and stocking the shelves. We rely on contributions of both food and money to keep our Food Pantry well-stocked and to assure that no family ever goes away empty-handed.
Prison Ministry The church provides transportation to take families and friends of inmates for visitation to various state prisons. These trips are on the first Saturday of every other month and drivers are needed for the church van. This ministry is an all day commitment. Foundry works with the Volunteers of America to provide a warm, safe place to sleep and fellowship for approximately 60 people for an entire week during the winter months. We serve a hot meal when they arrive in the evening, provide breakfast food and pack lunches for the next day. Missionary: Foundry partners with a missionary through a covenant relationship with Jacques Akasa Umembudi. Mr. Umembudi is a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries assigned to the Wings of Caring Aviation Ministry in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. This relationship provides a financial commitment as well as a commitment to pray for one another on a regular basis. Holiday Baskets - Angel Tree: Over the past few years, Foundry has provided very generous food baskets for fifteen or more families at the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Angel Tree gifts are also donated for these families and the homeless at the shelters. Heart Haven: We will be working with the United Methodist Men to provide support for this group home for mentally challenged adults in Virginia Beach. Souper Bowl Day: Together with the youth of Foundry, we collect cash donations for the national “souper Bowl Day of Caring.” This organization collects over four million dollars in funds for the homeless and hungry in our own country. We also collect cans of soup for our food bank on football Sunday of Super Bowl.
Habitat for Humanity: Foundry provides financial support to Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, which helps qualifying families to participate in the building of their own and others’ homes. They pay for the homes under an affordable, interest-free mortgage. Members of Foundry may also participate as hands-on volunteers, in any of a number of roles, for Habitat. Options for Children in Zambia: Foundry provides financial support to this organization which provides medical and dental care, food, and clothing to the children of Muchila, Zambia. This is a remote rural village which has been heavily impacted by the AIDS epidemic and struggles to provide sustenance to its many AIDS orphans and victims. Its ongoing projects include the development of a farm to improve the nutritional status of the entire community, building of a birthing center to serve the district of 26,000 residents, and establishment of a community center to provide local coordination of projects. With all of these programs the Missions Team is also responsible for raising funds to support our outreach ministries. To do this we have a lot of fun with an annual yard sale in May, a Chili Cook Off in the fall, and pumpkin sales and fall festival in October. Missions Team meets on the 1st Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
